Paul Herrick is a member of the Certified Auctioneers Institute. The following text, used by permission, explores the level of integrity required of all members of CAI... Education & IntegrityThe CAI designation is awarded to those individuals who qualify as professionals within the auction industry. The seller and buyer alike should seek the auctioneer and auction company most qualified by education and integrity to perform to the highest standards. The CAI designation is, in essence, the symbol of quality control within the auction industry and indicates a high level of professionalism. Since its inception in 1978, the Certified Auctioneers Institute has sought to establish and continually improve the standard of education and code of ethics for their members. The CAI designation may be used after the auctioneers name only after successfully completing intensive week-long courses of study at Indian University for three years. Subsequent use of the CAI designation is maintained by continued membership in the Certified Auctioneers Institute and the National Auctioneers Association, an on-going pursuit of knowledge of the auction industry by required attendance at seminars and educational programs offered by both organizations and other relevant courses of study. Expertise & ExperienceBefore acceptance by the Certified Auctioneers Institute, the applicant must have had at least two years experience in the auction industry and be a member of the National Auctioneers Association, which requires its own adherence to a high standard of integrity. Such requirements indicate that the CAI candidate has an established knowledge of the auction business. Their continued education through the required CAI courses broaden and enhance their perception of the auction industry and bring to the client the most advanced techniques of finance, accounting, marketing, appraisal, and management. Working KnowledgeThe CAI designation following an auctioneers name means that they have, through education and experience, the knowledge to perform and provide maximum service to both buyer and seller. Auctioneers qualified to use the CAI emblem will be quick to point out that their areas of expertise, and will provide detailed accounts of all financial preparation, advertising, and commissions, and an accurate appraisal of the current value of the property. If the individual auctioneer is not well versed in the specific type of auction, he will through his association with the Certified Auctioneers Institute and the National Auctioneers Association, be able to call on another auctioneer to assist, or share the auction with him, who will have the necessary experience. The professional CAI Auctioneer seeks every means of ensuring the fruitful completion of each auction for all parties. (This information used by permission.
